DC Comics Reveals Trailer For New Documentary Exploring Its Storied History
Fans of DC Comics will have a treat come July when Superpowered: The DC Story premieres on Max, or as the streaming service was once known, HBO Max. The three-part series was directed by renowned filmmakers Leslie Iwerks and Mark Catalena.
According to the studio, the feature will showcase the “ultimate origin story,” delving into how the famed comic book company’s legacy first came about over 85 years ago, with insights into the cast of writers, artists, live-action stars, and producers that have kept it relevant till today.
Of course, with the numerous blockbuster films DC Comics has inspired, the list of interviewees in this documentary isn’t one to be sniffed at. Viewers can expect the likes of Melissa Benoist, Tim Burton, Henry Cavill, Kaley Cuoco, Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson, and more to appear.
The first episode, titled The Hero’s Journey, will dive into how the first three DC Comics superheroes—Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, were originally created in the aftermath of World War II.
Secondly, Coming Of Age will bring fans through a difficult period of declining comic book sales, going behind the scenes as to how DC reset its entire universe and take a gamble on a Superman movie. It also touches on how the studio broke boundaries with its first Black superhero.
A Better Tomorrow gives diverse creators the platform to voice their thoughts on how they’ve been left out of comics for decades. DC paired up with Milestone Media to voice more marginalized characters, hoping its expanding universe of characters will be more representative.
All episodes of Superpowered: The DC Story will be narrated by Rosario Dawson. Fans can look forward to a grand total of over 60 new and archival interviews with the industry’s famed creators, actors, and executives as part of the compelling story.
