TikTok has become one of the biggest social media platforms currently out there, and now it’s gunning to compete against top e-commerce giants such as Amazon, Shein, and Temu.
TikTok already has a shopping feature on the app called TikTok Shop, where businesses can sell their goods and give the platform a commission in return. So far, it is only open to China-based sellers and customers in the UK and Southeast Asia.
It is now about to arrive on US soil, as per a report in Semafor, where not only will third-party goods be hosted, but TikTok’s own line of products, such as toys and kitchen gadgets, can be found. The move looks to ease sales between manufacturers in China who need help to tap into Western markets.
Those looking to do a little shopping while doom-scrolling can tap on the e-commerce tab in-app and visit the new store once it is available.
A separate tool called ‘Trendy Beat’, where goods from a Singapore-based company owned by ByteDance ships items to the UK, is being tested. Last week, it filed for a trademark application to bring the venture over to the US.
If all goes to plan, TikTok might become the first social media platform to directly offer physical goods from its app. Although, there is much to consider, including logistics, warehousing, and supply chain management, that could get in the way of this feature.
Just recently, TikTok unveiled a new avenue for content creators to connect with brands, offering them the opportunity to craft promotional videos in exchange for rewards if their content gets selected.
