MSCHF’s Next Buzzy Project Is To Pirate The ‘Bee Movie’, With Your Help
So far this year, we’ve had a microscopic handbag, Big Yellow Crocs Boots, and a pyramid scheme from the art collective MSCHF. And if the last three projects weren’t enough to prepare you for what’s to come next, you’re not alone.
In what MSCHF is touting as the “latest in pirating technology,” it’s about to deliver an unauthorized DIY version of the Bee Movie called the Free Movie straight from the hive. Well, MSCHF isn’t so much doing the legwork as it’s calling its worker bees to come forward and help it “crowd-pirate” the film.
Any purveyor of pop culture in the last 10 years can easily tell you that the Bee Movie has been cemented into meme history thanks to its incredibly wacky plot and the number of memes it has since spawned.
For those who have forgotten the plot, it’s about a bee, Barry B. Benson (played by Jerry Seinfeld), who leaves his community and family behind to sue the human race after experiencing a shortage of honey. As he sets forth on his journey, he meets a human woman and lawyer who ultimately leaves her husband to be with Barry—and to help him with his case. Yes, a completely normal plot for a kids movie.
And MSCHF has a completely normal idea to pirate the film as well. What the new DIY, community-based project entails is for fans to help redraw the movie frame by frame. To do so, you can head to the thefreemovie.buzz website, where it will randomize a scene for you, and with what essentially looks like its own version of Microsoft Paint, you can trace over the scene. In total, MSCHF needs 65,244 frames to be redrawn. And as of now, it has accomplished its goal.
Now, MSCHF will stitch the frames together to create the Free Movie. Ah, yes, completely legal as well. Right now, the project’s legality is still buzzing in the air, but that has never stopped MSCHF before. Previously it has been embroiled in a case regarding using Vans’ propriety sneaker silhouette to create its own ‘Wavy Baby’ version. So, whether Dreamworks will take after Barry and seek justice could bee anyone’s guess.
