Duolingo Will Teach You How To Play Musical Instruments One Lesson At A Time

Back in October, Duolingo announced its expansion into the area of mathematics. Now, the foreign language learning app has confirmed its desire to step beyond the borders of linguistics once again, soon branching out to music as well.

The education platform recently teased a new “multi-subject experience” service, which will incorporate both Duolingo Math and Duolingo Music in an all-in-one platform. From the spot, it appears students will be able to access short lessons, similar to the language-based ones, that offer interactive exercises to hone specific skills.

While it’s not yet clear which instruments users will be able to learn, initial images show piano keys and a drum, along with music theory notes for those completely new to the endeavor. The company said there will be “hundreds” of new lessons using over 200 “fun and familiar tunes.”

According to TechCrunch, Duolingo said it chose to branch out into music due to the lack of music education stateside. At the moment, more than 3.6 million students aren’t able to access these lessons, with private tutors costing up to US$400 a session.

In addition, for those already using the application to broaden their language capabilities, learning music has been shown to help in the areas of reading, verbal, listening, and even math. More information about the updated platform will be revealed at Duocon on October 11, 2023.
