Disney and Pixar’s emotional control centers are now going into overdrive as Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has surpassed Disney’s Frozen II to become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. With global box office earnings reaching an impressive US$1.46 billion, this sequel has lit up the hearts of audiences worldwide.
A potent blend of nostalgia and fresh faces are to thank for this success. Nearly 10 years on, viewers get to reunite—and grow up—with Riley as she tackles the turbulent terrain of adolescence alongside her trusty crew—Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear, and Anger. The introduction of brand-new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, and Nostalgia add a layer of depth and relatability.
Director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen are honoring the milestone with a delightful illustration featuring the emotions gleefully surrounding a giant number one, with the ever-so-slightly bored Ennui perched on top. “We are absolutely blown away by all the love for Inside Out 2 from around the world. Thank you for joining us on this incredible emotional rollercoaster,” their message reads.
Walt Disney Animation Studios has chimed in on the celebratory spirit as well, sharing a playful image of Elsa and Anna passing the torch (literally) to Inside Out 2’s Envy, who is being lifted by Olaf. A rightfully beaming Joy completes the picture.
“Everyone from Arendelle and Walt Disney Animation Studios is sending warm hugs to all of Pixar on their incredible achievement as Inside Out 2 becomes animation's biggest movie ever!” the studio qups.
Looks like there’s plenty of joy to go around, especially on the Happiest Place on Earth.
