When Apple introduced Face ID in 2017, it was somehow convinced that users would catch up and prefer it to its touch-based authentication technology. Fast forward three years later, and, surprise surprise, people still miss the old Touch ID. TrueDepth facial recognition doesn’t always instantly unlock the iPhone, and this pain is even more excruciating now that people are wearing masks.
Apple killed the home button with the iPhone X, which came with a distracting notch that the Cupertino tech giant claimed was necessary to house Face ID’s technology.
Well, it turns out that the solution to unlocking a device without a home button or unsightly notch is simple—and Apple finally solved it with the latest iPad Air.
As revealed to customers during the September 15 launch, the US$599 lite tablet’s Touch ID has been planted in its power button.

It really could have been that easy.
The new and improved Touch ID, which ushers the end of the home button in iPads, also lets users make purchases through Apple Pay and authenticate app installations at the literal push of a button.
This step seems so seamless, users are pushing for Apple to bring back Touch ID in the iPhone 12 lineup, which the company had to delay due to the coronavirus.
If you’ve been suffering from Touch ID withdrawal symptoms for three years, you’re not alone:
