Guinness is a master of illusion, having been known to conjure up its beer using color, negative space and the such in past campaigns. So you can imagine the brand’s torment when drinking establishments in the UK shut down and—just like seeing semblances of an ex after a breakup—lookalikes of its stout started appearing everywhere.
With pubs, restaurants, and bars in London finally reopening on May 17, Guinness is looking back at the doppelgängers that surrounded fans during the lockdown and is saying goodbye to the taunting. Its latest UK #LooksLikeGuinness advertisement, which features the classic song Always On My Mind, toasts to the reopening of food and beverage establishments in the city.
From a white cat on a black compost bin to a newspaper stand and a chimney with white birds perched on it, Guinness seems to be everywhere even when it’s out of reach. Fans are also invited to share their sightings of Guinness stout doppelgängers by uploading photos on social media with ‘#LooksLikeGuinness’.
According to a report by Marketing Communication News, Guinness previously donated £30 million (US$42 million) to support UK pub and hospitality establishments over the past year, in addition to distributing over 30,000 PPE kits in the country and providing aid to over 25,000 pubs. It also pledged £1 million (US$1.4 million) for bartenders trying to make ends meet during the first wave of the pandemic.
