Following whistleblower Frances Haugen’s exposé on how Facebook was seemingly placing profits before users’ safety, and another person set to testify before Congress, Facebook has decided to clamp down on internal leakers.
According to The New York Times, the social media giant will limit staff’s access to internal groups dealing with “sensitive” issues, which could include user safety. While this was meant to prevent further documents from being leaked, this new regulation was immediately revealed to the media.
This move, despite how it amusingly couldn’t even keep itself under wraps, is unsurprising, considering how the files Haugen shared could easily be accessed by numerous Facebook employees. It included a study on how Instagram made teens feel worse about themselves, as well as how the social media platform treated its whitelist VIPs.
As reported by Engadget, Facebook has since changed its tune on making such information available to everyone, with a new staff memo allegedly reading: “Sensitive Integrity discussions will happen in closed, curated forums in the future.”
It might just be too late. Haugen’s leaks have already reached lawmakers, and she’s set to testify in the European Parliament soon.
