Russian director, Klim Shipenko, and actor Yulia Peresild, have returned to Earth following their 12-day adventure on the International Space Station (ISS) to film the first-ever feature-length film in orbit.
The duo had travelled to the ISS together with cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov earlier this month onboard the Baikonur Cosmodrome. On their journey back, they were accompanied by Oleg Novitsky, who himself had been living aboard the space station for the last six months.
“The descent vehicle of the crewed spacecraft Soyuz MS-18 is standing upright and is secure. The crew are feeling good!” tweeted Russian space agency Roscosmos as the pair touched down.
According to The Guardian, if everything progresses according to schedule, the film-makers will be the first to release a movie shot in space — possibly edging out Tom Cruise’s project with NASA and SpaceX.
The film’s main plot focuses on a surgeon who heads onboard the ISS to save the life of a cosmonaut. Actual cosmonauts, such as Skaplerov, and two other Russians aboard the space station, are touted to have made cameos in the movie.
As per AFP, head of Channel One Russia, Konstatin Ernst, said the pair’s heroic descent will also feature in another movie.
However, despite the smooth landing, the crew did run into some problems while in orbit. Last week, the ship’s thruster had misfired and temporarily destablized the ISS when the crew was conducting a test on the returning spacecraft.
Later this year, Russia’s space agency will resume its tourist trips to space after a decade, as Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa heads to the ISS for a trip unlike any other.
Еще 12 дней назад никто точно не знал, как снимать кино в невесомости, но Юля Пересильд и Клим Шипенко освоились в первый же день.
