The world of designer goods can often leave one in awe or in stupor. And with price tags that reach sky-high, they are usually crafted with immaculate skill and carry opulent designs that make the dip in the bank a little worth it. However, recently there has been a trend that has fashion houses taking everyday items such as brown paper bags and using them as inspiration for accessories that could have customers taking out a small loan to afford—as seen with Louis Vuitton’s latest offering, a “plastic freezer bag” with a picture of one of its more luxury offerings slapped onto it.
What fans of the brand are presented with is a carrier that looks very much like something you would use to transport your ice cream around if you were heading out for a picnic or over to a friend’s place for dinner.
Freezer Sac Plathas all the makings of a plastic freezer bag, including a shiny exterior, easy-to-hold handles, and even its stitching that resembles that of packs you would find in the grocery store.
The only thing setting this one apart is the realistic images of its other bags on the front. That, and the fact that it is made out of cowhide leather, would probably be the only two telltale signs that, no, you can’t put your frozen meat into this bag. Well, you could, but at US$3,950 for the Freezer Sac Plat and US$3,700 for the Freezer Handle Soft Trunk, you really shouldn’t.
Interestingly, these editions of the original purses cost the same or more than the ones they were based on. The original Handle Soft Trunk comes in at the same price, while the Sac Plat is US$1,300 less than its “icy” counterpart.
Luxury goods always pose an important question of whether spending that much money is worth it. For example, with the Hermès Birkin—which has come in as the most famous designer purse in a new study—you know you will be getting not only your money’s worth, they are also usually investments that can be sold later down the line for profit. But in this case, is a picture really worth thousands of dollars?
