Ryan Gosling, everyone’s favorite Ken doll and font fanatic, has made a dramatic return to Saturday Night Live to revisit his 2017 character, Steven, who was deeply tormented by the use of the common Papyrus in the logo for James Cameron’s Avatar.
In Papyrus 2, Steven spirals into typographic turmoil once more upon discovering that Avatar: The Way of Water has made a seemingly minor change to its logo—it hasn’t just reused the divisive typeface but has dared to embolden it.
The pseudo-thriller sees Steven, upon figuring out the graphic designer behind Avatar 2’s branding is the same as the one from the original, go out of his way to finally meet his nemesis.
It’s a cathartic end to the typographic tragedy, as viewers finally learn Steven’s true identity and the underlying reason for his obsession.
