Banksy might be a known opposer of capitalism, but nothing can stop the artworks of the anonymous street artist from being sold off at sky-high prices. At least, that’s what most had assumed.
The artist’s iconic Girl with Balloon painting nearly found a new owner at art dealer Sotheby’s auction on Friday evening—the sale closed with a remarkable bidding price of £1,042,000 (US$1.4 million)—until it self-destructed mere seconds after.
In a follow-up post on Instagram, Banksy described how the stunt was pulled off.
Having foreseen that the painting would land in the hands of others, Banksy installed a “secret shredder” within it a few years ago, “in case it was ever put up for auction.”
The artist also shared footage of a masked, hooded man—presumably the painter—concealing the contraption under the artwork’s frame.
Banksy captioned the post with a quote by Picasso: “The urge to destroy is also a creative urge.”
