An audacious duo might have hit their peak with the law after nude photos of them possibly having sex atop Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza at night started circulating on the internet.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Antiquities in Egypt, a conservative country with a Muslim majority, issued a statement saying that the tryst “violates public morality.” An investigation on the matter has since been requested.
The pictures belong to Danish photographer Andreas Hvid, who was presumably the man in them. Hvid, who is known for his height-defying photos, also posted a video of himself scaling one of the seven wonders of the world.
Visitors are neither allowed to climb the pyramids nor permitted to visit the site after hours.
Ashraf Mohi, director of the Giza Plateau, addressed that the investigation should first determine if the footage is legitimate. Following which, Hvid might face penalties should he be found to have damaged the ancient monument during the act.
The photographer has not been arrested, and the punishments he might face remains to be known. According to Egyptian law, people who commit indecent acts in public could be fined and/or sentenced up to a year in prison.
However, Zahi Hawass, an archaeologist, former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities and former director general of Giza Plateau, told NBC News that he was “100-percent” certain that the footage was “photoshopped,” as there was “no way” anyone would be able to enter the site at night.
Further, the stones shown in the images were “too small,” Hawass added.
Hvid has since deleted all but one of the photos from his portfolio and social media accounts, although internet users have reposted them.
