Cara Delevingne Goes Topless To Recreate Iconic Janet Jackson Photo For Balmain
By Izza Sofia, 01 Feb 2019
Balmain’s spring 2019 campaign sees model Cara Delevingne and creative director Olivier Rousteing paying tribute to Janet Jackson.
In the photo, the topless Delevingne is seen standing in front of Rousteing while looking gazing into the camera, while his hands cupped her breasts. The pose is a recreation of 1993 photograph of Janet Jackson and her ex-boyfriend Rene Elizondo, shot by photographer Patrick Demarchelier.
Rousteing took to Instagram to share images from Balmain’s campaign, and labeling Jackson’s photo as “iconic.” Shot by Berlin-based photographer Dan Belieu, Rousteing told WWD that although the images appears sensual, “there is nothing flirtatious about them.”
He described the campaign as the reunion of two skin tones: black and white. He further explained that posing naked was all about authenticity and he wanted “something pure and transparent.” Another image of the campaign shows a nude Delevingne sitting on a cube, in front of a large “B” which is a reimagined version of Pierre Balmain’s initial logo.
Speaking about Delevingne, who is the face of Balmain, Rousteing said it marks an important moment for their friendship. He explained that he wants Delevingne’s modeling skills to do the talking in the campaign as her gaze is “so strong and magnetic,” it becomes “an item of clothing in itself.”
