After an earlier revelation on Instagram testing out its new feature that hides likes from followers, it turns out parent company Facebook is also making significant changes to its app and website.
The new Facebook will be focused on groups, and its primary color will be set in white. All these were disclosed at the F8 Facebook conference on Tuesday.
The website and app will be undergoing huge aesthetic changes, with the familiar blue bar at the top of the social network’s interface no longer being there. Instead, a bright Facebook logo in a lighter blue will take its place. Facebook has also updated its profile picture to the new branding.
The app’s navigational icons have been shifted to the top, with the icons for stories being magnified while Facebook’s status update box has been downsized, making the UI appear more similar to that of Instagram.
Having been in the social networking industry for over a decade, Facebook seems to also have noticed a shift in priorities for personal connections. It now places emphasis on groups with new options like ‘Meet New Friends’, encouraging users to begin friendships from their school, workplace or region of residence.
Users will also see recommendations for groups in many more sections of the app such as ‘Marketplace’, ‘Facebook Watch’ and more.
The reason for the revamp? Facebook says in a press statement that its 400 million groups are among the most “meaningful” ways people use the platform. Ironically, the platform is helping users find likeminded souls who are looking for offline friendships by starting online.
Not sure how to adjust to the new Facebook? The feature is still being tested, with the app already adopting its redesigns, while the desktop changes will follow later this year.
