Adidas’ three stripes have been a mainstay in athletic wear for decades, but lately, they’ve been experiencing some sort of a renaissance. From the instantly recognizable Stan Smith to the cult-favorite Samba and Gazelle, these retro kicks are gracing the feet of fashion influencers and everyday people alike—and allowing the sportswear giant to find its grounding.
The company reported strong first-quarter growth in 2024, and a significant contributor to that is its array of old-school styles. The resurgence of classic styles like the Samba and Gazelle has fueled a 14% surge in demand in its home market of Europe (conversely, sales have slowed down in North America, per Reuters).
According to Adidas’ earnings report, sales of retro-inspired shoes were “very strong and growing.” This demand helped propel the company to a net profit of $182 million in the first quarter, a remarkable turnaround from a loss in the same period last year.
The foundation of this success, it seems, lies in Adidas’ rich heritage. Classic styles like Stan Smith and Superstar, introduced in the 1960s and 70s respectively, have become cultural icons. With that, the brand isn’t just releasing carbon copies of past designs. It is also thoughtfully reinterpreting these classics with premium materials, fresh colorways, and subtle design tweaks. This approach keeps the shoes relevant for modern consumers while retaining the essence of the originals. Collaborations with influential designers and streetwear labels further elevate the cachet of these retro styles.

But Adidas isn’t just riding the nostalgia wave. The footwear giant has also embraced sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly materials into its retro line, aligning itself with the social values of consumers who prioritize ethical and sustainable practices in their purchases.
Consumers crave authenticity and connection. With a robust lineup of retro styles and a commitment to thoughtful innovation, the brand is ensuring its classic kicks stay relevant for the next generation.
