Tokyo 2020 has unveiled a collection of official art posters designed by creative professionals around the world.
The series includes work by both Japanese and international artists, such as British painter Chris Ofili, Manga artist Naoki Urasawa and French illustrator Philippe Weisbecker. Japanese graphic designer Taku Satoh, photographer Takashi Homma and painter Shinro Ohtake have also contributed to the selection.
The artists were invited to put their own spin on the Olympic games. Weisbecker, for instance, created a minimalist image of the Olympic stadium by drawing a line on rice paper. Satoh produced a hand-drawn poster showing the five Olympic rings, with patterned lines emphasizing the different trajectories towards their final goal on the logo.
Urasawa, on the other hand, illustrated a single page of a sports manga, a genre he says is “unique” to Japan. He elaborates that the posters convey various representations that “transcend sporting events, race and gender.”
