Family bonding takes center stage during Chinese New Year, but Apple breaks conventions by showcasing a more complex side of familial ties with its Chinese New Year short film for 2020, just as it has broken boundaries by shooting the whole ad with the iPhone 11 Pro.
The eight-minute film, titled Daughter, is “inspired by true stories” and depicts three generations of women coming together for their family gathering despite their differences, Apple explains in an email to DesignTAXI.
The video was produced by Academy Award-nominated Theodore Melfi and award-winning Cinematographer Lawrence Sher using iPhone 11 Pro’s 4K triple-camera system and cinematic video stabilization.
Daughter stars leading Chinese actress Zhou Xun, who plays a single mother. The woman creates her own rules and defeats conventions of relying on a husband by working as a taxi driver to feed her daughter, and ends up working on Chinese New Year’s Eve. Nevertheless, she finds herself in an unexpected reunion with both her mother and child.
“Daughter reflects the rapidly changing social norms of China and the generational differences between traditional families and modern youth,” Apple details. “It underscores the important message that no matter how much we all grow apart, humanity has the power to bring us together.”
In addition to the video’s release is a behind-the-scenes showcase called Pro to Pro, which reveals how Melfi and Sher leveraged features like Low Light, Slow-mo, Portrait Mode and beyond to create a cinema-worthy film “all with a device that fits in your hand.”
