The Academy has unveiled the Oscar nomination list for 2020, and social media users are not pleased with the missed opportunities for females, people of color and underrated actors who have presented spectacular performances in their respective roles.
Internet users are specifically addressing the lack of recognition for Jennifer Lopez in her role forHustlers, as well as the unjustified snubs of Lupita Nyong’O in US, Taron Egerton in Rocketman, Awkwafina and Zhao Shuzhen in The Farewell. Not to mention the entire cast of Parasite, who did not get nominated.
Female directors are also expected to go home from the Oscars empty-handed. In response, Issa Rae sneakily remarked, “Congratulations to those men,” in a video revealing the nomination list for the ‘Best Director’ award.
Viewers felt that Greta Gerwig deserved a nomination for her work in Little Women, as did Lulu Wang for The Farewell and Lorene Scafaria for Hustlers.
Some expressed their displeasure that Todd Phillips’ Joker received 11 nominations for this year’s Oscars.
and yes, only seeing parasite as a technical/directorial achievement even though it is also an acting one is a bias rooted in the inability to recognize the humanity of asian people

No Lupita. No Taron Egerton. No Adam Sandler. No Awkwafina. No Jennifer Lopez. Nothing for The Farewell. One nomination for Knives Out.

So you’re telling me that not only could the Oscars not nominate any female directors but they also failed to nominate Awkwafina, J.Lo, or even Lupita? Glad to see the Academy is up to their same bullshit #OscarNoms pic.twitter.com/fzYmYXbwMf
