Part of the appeal of enjoying a bag of Cheetos is the lickable, bright orange residue left on your fingers.
It turns out that there’s an official name for that: Cheetle. Frito-Lay confirmed the moniker this month, and it is leaving a bitter taste in some mouths.
“We have long called that red and orange cheese dust ‘Cheetle,’” Rachel Ferdinando, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Frito-Lay North America, revealed to
TODAY. “But it became clear from our fans the special interest they had, so we knew it was time to share our beloved name for this magic ingredient.”
The name was trademarked in 2005, but was rarely used in public until recently.
TODAY also learned that the orange dust used to be called “cheedle” before “Cheetle” was trademarked.
The official Twitter account of Cheetos’ mascot Chester the Cheetah additionally confirmed the name with a video on 3 January addressing, “It’s not Cheeto dust, #ItsCheetle.”
The name will definitely take some getting used to, and many customers can’t think of it without being reminded of
Avengers star Don Cheadle.
“Now when I think of Don Cheadle… [I] have to think ‘Don Cheetle’ and now I want to die,” one Twitter user wrote.
Or, you can just call it “Cheeto dust” and live in blissful ignorance.
