The Unicode Consortium, the universal standard for emojis, recently announced the confirmed lineup of
new emoticons that will enter mobile devices this year. Apart from the bubble tea icon, one of the most talked-about additions in Emoji 13.0 is the
pinched fingers emoji, known by some as “Italian hand.” It turns out that there’s yet another reason this emoticon is set to be among the most popularly-used ones this year.
Aside from appealing to people of Italian descent, the pinched fingers emoji is raising eyebrows in the LGBTQ community for its… versatility. Specifically, Twitter users have been hailing it as the “fisting” emoji.
The reference was first implied by brand strategy consultant Nicolette Mason, who
tweeted, “Who wants to tell them?”
“At last, OUR eggplant emoji has arrived,” author Kate Gorton
replied. “The Italian lesbians are having a field day right now,” commented another Twitter user.
Emoji 13.0 comprises 117 emojis, 55 of which are gender and skin-tone variants. However you may use it, you might be happy to learn that the pinched fingers emoji will be available in six skin tones.
Unicode tells DesignTAXI that the new emojis will arrive by September or October this year.
