If you love the pre-installed landscape wallpapers in your Mac or PC, be prepared to have your breath taken away by Google Earth’s new images captured by cameras in space.
On Tuesday, Google Earth released over 1,000 gorgeous satellite photos to its Earth View collection, totaling the number of available images to about 2,500.
Gopal Shah, product manager at Google Earth, says users have been downloading visuals from the Earth View collection as wallpapers and screensavers for years. If this is you, it’s time for an update, as the upgraded imagery has been optimized for modern high-resolution screens, and covers photography of more locations around the world.
The new photos are also sharper and more vibrant. Most of them are in 1800 x 1200, but some go up to 4K resolution.
To create Google Earth View, the company partnered with German software company Ubilabs to develop technology capable of combing 36 million square miles of satellite imagery while maintaining proper camera control.
The color profiles of the imagery are then optimized accordingly, before being exported int ultra high resolution.
