In Snow White, the villain hands an apple to the protagonist, but this will probably never happen elsewhere in pop culture. According to Knives Out director Rian Johnson, Apple doesn’t let bad guys hold iPhones in films.
Johnson made the surprising reveal in an interview with Vanity Fair, divulging that while iPhones can appear in movies, the tech giant doesn’t allow villains to carry them in order to protect its brand image.
“I don’t know if I should say this or not… It’s very interesting,” the director shared. “Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies, but—and this is very pivotal—if you’re ever watching a mystery movie, bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.”
This means if you can’t figure out the malevolent figure in a film, you can look out for smartphone-wielding characters who aren’t using an iPhone.
“Every single filmmaker who has a bad guy in their movie that’s supposed to be a secret wants to murder me right now,” Johnson joked.
