Wendy’s, the fast food chain notorious for its brutal tweets against rivals, went quiet this week and locked its Twitter account, which means its rants can’t be viewed by the public.
Could it be that the restaurant is suddenly remorseful over its snappy disses? Of course not.
As discovered by innovation consultancy R/GA’s strategy director Jack Appleby, the chain started sending out tweets about DoorDash soon after it made its Twitter account private.
It turns out that the move is part of an advertising campaign with the delivery partner, and focuses more on making customers feel special.
“Alright, Friendys, breakfast is just around the corner, so we’ve gone private,” Wendy’s tweeted. “It’s just you, us, and the tweets.”
Wendy’s took advantage of its private status even further, and invited Twitter followers to grab a free coupon by sliding into its DMs.
Of course, the deal isn’t as exclusive as it appears to be. “You get that lovely faux-exclusivity-that-really-anyone-can-use gag,” Appleby explained.
Curious how @Wendys plays this whole locked/private account thing.

Positioning something as exclusive for followers would be interesting, especially if it's screenshotable - then you get that lovely faux-exclusivity-that-really-anyone-can-use gag.
Andddd it’s a @Wendys x @DoorDash promo. pic.twitter.com/qzm3D3kt67
