TIME Honors 100 Women Who Shaped Last Century, From Princess Diana To Beyoncé
TIME magazine has released its list of ‘100 Women of the Year’ in celebration of International Women’s Day on 8 March.
The magazine celebrates influential woman who have been “overshadowed” by men throughout the last 100 years despite their glorious achievements. The project is inspired by its ‘Person of the Year’ title, which used to be called ‘Man of the Year’ until 1999.
The publication spotlights the women who have shaped the world, from the Suffragists in 1920 to Greta Thunberg in 2019. Over the past 100 years, only 11 women have been crowned ‘Person of the Year’. This time, the magazine released 89 additional covers to honor women who should have been featured in addition to the original covers.
The covers include “women who occupied positions from which men were chosen” and they are former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir a former Philippines president Corazon Aquino.
Others include Gestapo’s most wanted spy Virginia Hall, the first woman to run for a presidential nomination of a political party Sen. Margaret Chase Smith and an activist within Black Power Angele Davis.
According to former TIME editor-in-chief Nancy Gibbs, the project shows the “ways in which women held power due to systemic inequality.” “Women wielded soft power long before the concept was defined,” she added.
