Fashion Nova is in hot soup over its latest advertising move, which sees the online fast-fashion store encouraging US customers to use their stimulus checks to buy its products.
The gesture comes after the US government began giving out stimulus checks to millions of Americans to purchase essentials during this
crucial period. The rebates benefit about 90-percent of households,
according to the Tax Policy Center. Eligible Americans received US$1,200, married couples got US$2,400, and married parents got an additional US$500 for every child under the age of 17.
The online store promptly sent out a text message to customers reading, “When That Stimulus Deposit Hits… Save Up to 80% OFF SITEWIDE.”
Understandably, the move wasn’t taken too lightly, seeing as how the payments are supposed to be used for essential purposes, such as paying bills and shopping for groceries.
Fashion Nova was criticized for the “ignorant” message. “People are out of work and y’all think it’s a great time to shop,” one Twitter user reprimanded.
“The stimulus isn’t for shopping, it’s for people who need it during such hard times,” another reminded.
There are certainly wiser ways to use this payment. Americans are advised to focus on fulfilling their basic needs first. You won’t be wearing new sparkly heels out during this time, anyway.
