Facebook’s ‘Messenger Rooms’ Challenges Zoom With 50-Way Video Calls, Backdrops

Video calls have become more prominent, as people stay indoors during the pandemic crisis, forcing many to join apps like Zoom and Houseparty to stay in touch with their immediate circles and loved ones.
Now, Facebook is stepping in with a video call feature called ‘Messenger Rooms’, accessible via its platform and Messenger app. Video conferences here are able to support up to 50 participants, and those without Facebook accounts can also join in with a link.
You can simply drop in any video call groups or create groups for various activities to do together virtually on Facebook’s platform or through its Messenger app. With the new feature, you can spontaneously connect with family, friends, and people with shared interests at your fingertips.
“Host celebrations, gather a book club or just hang out on the couch with friends,” Facebook suggested in its blog post. “You don’t need to call someone and hope it’s a good time or check everyone’s calendar first,” it continued.
Similar to Zoom, Messenger Rooms will also allow customizable virtual backgrounds for users to play around with.
The social network is also working on integrating the Messenger Rooms to Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Portal video call tool so users can hop onto a video chat and use other apps or devices simultaneously. In time, you will also be able to go on face-to-face virtual dates within the Facebook Dating app.
