NASA’s otherworldly images are a universal fascination. The good news is that the space agency has been capturing and releasing new photos every day—even on your birthday—and it has amassed enough pictures over the decades for an ultimate showdown for some of the best NASA photos yet.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and the 20th anniversary of NASA’s Earth Observatory, NASA had members of the public vote on their favorite images of Earth from the Earth Observatory library.
56,000 votes later, NASA got its winner: a 2001 photo by University of South Florida remote sensing specialist Serge Andrefouet, who—using the Landsat 7 satellite camera—snapped a picturesque vision of sand and seaweed beds sculpted by tides and ocean currents in the Bahamas.
The next contender is an astronaut-taken photo of an erupting Raikoke Volcano on the Kuril Islands, captured on 22 June 2019. This was its first explosion since 1924.
