Apple’s New Feature Lets You Instantly Send Medical Info To First Responders

Apple’s next iOS software update will come with a feature that allows you to send medical information from your Medical ID to first responders when you call 911 from your iPhone or Apple Watch.
The iOS 13.5 update is now accessible to software developers, and will soon be made available to the public. The new health feature, called ‘Share Medical ID During Emergency Calls’, will let Apple users send reports detailing their medical history during emergency calls.
The Medical ID function in Apple devices allows you to manually key in their health information, such as drug allergies, medications you are taking, and existing conditions. You can also add in emergency contact information so medical professionals know who to reach out if necessary.
Apple promises it will not be able to view users’ information as the data is encrypted, according to CNET.
When you make an emergency call with the new feature enabled, Apple’s Emergency SOS function will transfer your Medical ID information to first responders in locations with the Enhanced Emergency Data services available. The fall detection technology in the Apple Watch Series 4 and 5 will also be shared if you make an emergency call from the device.
When a person’s health information is readily available to medical professionals, they will be able to speed up their emergency response time, a step that is glaringly crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.
