Aside from 3D-printing face shields to help meet a shortage in personal protective equipment in the medical industry, adidas is thinking long-term and has designed a reusable face mask to keep the coronavirus at bay as lockdown measures ease.

Its new product is called the Face Cover, a reusable mask produced with the company’s high-performance recycled fabric material known as ‘Primegreen’, which is also free from virgin plastic.

The face mask is made to be breathable and comfortable, thanks to its flexible material and stretchable bands. It is also branded with the text, “WASH. DRY. REUSE,” to indicate how wearers can easily keep it clean for subsequent use.

“As lockdown measures begin to gradually ease up and we look to leaving our homes to reconnect with our teammates, we want to help,” the sportswear giant shares in a press release. “While not medically graded, [the Face Cover is] designed to help prevent the spread of transmissible viruses and germs, to help protect those around you.”

adidas says it adjusted its design and supply chain processes back in April in order to manufacture the Face Covers.

Available in packs of three, the Face Covers are now retailing in North America, Europe and China, with a fraction of the sales going to Save The Children’s Global Coronavirus Respond Fund. For every adidasUS$16 pack sold, adidas will donate US$2, or the equivalent local currency, to support the nonprofit’s COVID-19 relief efforts.
