Shaken by the pained cries of Black Lives Matter protesters demanding for racial justice and denouncing police brutality following the death of George Floyd, TIME magazine honored victims of systemic racism in its 15 June cover.
Floyd, who died after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned his neck down by the knee for almost nine minutes, cried out for his deceased mother during his final moments. The cover art created by painter Titus Kaphar aptly references this with an African-American mother dolefully embracing the cutout silhouette of a baby.
“In her expression, I see the black mothers who are unseen, and rendered helpless in this fury against their babies,” explained Kaphar.
TIME magazine also filled the red border surrounding the cover with the names of 35 black men and women who had died as a result of systemic racism, many of whom had their lives shortened by the hands of police, and sparked the Black Lives Matter cause.
The publication acknowledged that the names are only “a fraction of the many more” who died after being subjected to racist violence.
They comprise: Trayvon Martin; Yvette Smith; Eric Garner; Michael Brown; Laquan McDonald; Tanisha Anderson; Akai Gurley; Tamir Rice; Jerame Reid; Natasha McKenna; Eric Harris; Walter Scott; Freddie Gray; William Chapman; Sandra Bland; Darrius Stewart; Samuel DuBose; Janet Wilson; Calin Roquemore; Alton Sterling; Philando Castile; Joseph Mann; Terence Crutcher; Chad Robertson; Jordan Edwards; Aaron Bailey; Stephon Clark; Danny Ray Thomas; Antwon Rose; Botham Jean; Atatiana Jefferson; Michael Dean; Ahmaud Arbery; Breonna Taylor; George Floyd.
