Since Thursday, Facebook has started to label content from foreign state-controlled media outlets, according to the company’s press release.
Media outlets that are mostly state-run news agencies, including Russia’s RT and Sputnik, and China’s Xinhua News and the People’s Daily, will receive the “state-controlled” label to their posts and pages.
Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy Nathaniel Gleicher stated that the new move aims to provide some context to users on who is behind the content shared on Facebook.
The company also strives to provide labels to paid content and advertisements to offer complete transparency to its users. Facebook is looking into placing labels on individual stories with posts from state-controlled media outlets when they appear in someone’s timeline, as well.
