Many soon-to-be parents flock to popular website BabyNames.com to look for potential names for their children. The website has now taken its stance against racial injustice by listing out names of Black lives lost as a result of police or civilian violence on its home page.
The top of the section reads, “Each one of these names was somebody’s baby.” Below, it highlights, “BabyNames.com stands in solidarity with the Black community.”
The names are placed in a black box in the middle of the blue and pink homepage. The list begins with Emmett Till, who was killed in 1955 and inspired the civil rights movement. Other names of victims from police violence include Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Botham Jean, Philando Castile, and George Floyd.
The move comes amid anti-racism protests that were sparked from the death of Floyd last month. The website seems to be adding more names to the list.
BabyNames.com’s Twitter account also repeaed the names of the victims. “Say their names, #BlackLivesMatter,” the post. In another tweet, the site included a donation link to the Black Lives Matter movement.
