Germany’s prolific news magazine Der Spiegel has released its
latest issue with President Donald Trump on its front cover.
The illustration depicts Trump seated in the Oval Office, holding onto an ignited match stick. In the background, Washington, DC is set ablaze with demonstrators standing amid the flames.
The cover story examines and condemns Trump’s approach to governing during the
coronavirus pandemic, as well as the increasing
anti-racism concerns in the nation.
The cover’s headline reads, “Der Feuerteufel,” which translates to “the fire devil.” The phrase is often used in reference to a firestarter or firebug. The subheader, “Ein Präsident setzt sein Land in Brand,” means, “A president sets fire to his country.”
Via the translation from
AdAge, the cover story details the wave of protests following the death of George Floyd by the hand of a Minneapolis cop. It notes that Black Americans are “fed up with everyday racism in their country.”
The story questions Trump’s actions as the nation faces deep crises. “What is Donald Trump doing? He’s fueling hatred to distract from his own failure, and trying to secure his reelection with highly questionable methods,” the story reads.
Der Spiegel has also released an
English-language version of the cover story written by Guido Mingels, Roland Nelles, Ralf Neukirch, René Pfister and Marc Pitzke. It is titled, “Democracy on the Defensive in Trump’s America,” and is underlined with the text, “Coronavirus, economic collapse and now mass demonstrations for racial equality.”
