Nickelodeon has hinted to viewers that the famous yellow and porous resident of Bikini Bottom might be part of the LGBTQ+ community.
The network raised curiosity after a Pride Month tweet showing fan art of SpongeBob Squarepants with Schwoz Schwartz from Henry Danger and Korra from Legend of Korra.
The trio were shown wearing rainbow-colored clothing or pictured against colorful backgrounds, hinting to viewers that they could be part of the community.
“Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month,” Nickelodeon tweeted.
The channel did not state SpongeBob’s sexual orientation, though.
The tweet prompted reactions from Twitter fans, though many were not surprised by the announcement. “SpongeBob gay? I mean he literally had a baby with Patrick,” one user said. “Y’all just figured out SpongeBob gay?” another user said alongside an image of him squeezing Squidward’s butt.
SpongeBob’s sexuality has always been a topic of discussion among internet users. The character’s creator Stephen Hillenburg, however, mentioned in an interview in 1999 that SpongeBob was “almost asexual.”
He might therefore belong in the ”plus” of the LGBTQ+ circle, which could stand for asexual, as well.
