UK fast-fashion retailer Boohoo is being commended for using honest-to-goodness photographs of a plus-size model in a product listing for lingerie.
As people spend more time indoors during the
pandemic, model Anna Fritzdorf had a recent Boohoo shoot completed at home, possibly even taking the photos herself. The images of her in a
yellow sleeveless top and thong were published online by the store, unretouched and retaining her natural curves, stretch marks and skin texture.
The photos were discovered and shared by Facebook user Lisa Evans, who lauded, “Well done, Boohoo, for using models with real curves and stretch marks.”
This evidently attracted more praise on social media, but some internet users also learned that Fritzdorf has appeared in studio-quality photos on the website that are likely airbrushed with nary a stretch mark in sight.

When asked why some images were
photoshopped while others were left as they were, a spokesperson for Boohoo told
Insider that some of its product photos were captured before the company adopted a photo-editing policy celebrating diverse female forms and “so-called ‘imperfections’” like scars and stretch marks.
“I believe the shots used for comparison were from some years ago before the policy was introduced,” the representative explained. However, they stressed that the appearance of stretch marks can also be “minimized” under in-house studio lighting, so audiences will probably notice details in at-home shoots more since “they are all shot in natural light.”
They added that Boohoo is “delighted” people are loving the authenticity emanating from the pictures.
