Unilever has promised to rebrand Fair & Lovely, a skin-lightening cream predominately sold across Asia. The product has been criticized over the years for encouraging negative outlooks on dark skin tones.
The company has now acknowledged the brand’s promotion of “a singular ideal of beauty,” and says it is now working towards inclusivity for all skin tones in its global skincare brands.
“We recognize that the use of the words ‘fair,’ ‘white,’ and light’ suggest a singular ideal of beauty that we don’t think is right, and we want to address this,” said Sunny Jain, president of beauty and personal care at Unilever.
Unilever also defended that the cream was never meant to be “a bleaching product.”
Its decision comes timely as protests about Black people being prejudiced against due to their skin color are being carried out across the world, and there have already been several petitions against the Fair & Lovely brand.
We’re committed to a skin care portfolio that's inclusive of all skin tones, celebrating the diversity of beauty. That’s why we’re removing the words ‘fairness’, ‘whitening’ & ‘lightening’ from products, and changing the Fair & Lovely brand name.https://t.co/W3tHn6dHqE
