As civil unrest continues across the US, brands have taken a stance against Facebook for allowing misinformation and hate speech to be present on its platform despite being called out multiple times.
Companies have started to pull their ads from the platform to call for a policy change in regulations. Unilever is the latest brand to join onboard the Facebook ad boycott, #StopHateForProfit, started by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
The consumer goods company will be one of the largest brands to halt advertisements on the platform in a bid for a positive change. However, the brand will extend the boycott over to Facebook-owned Instagram and Twitter.
Unilever will join others who have already pledged for the boycott, such as Verizon, Coca-Cola, and Patagonia.
Unilever announced its decision in a Facebook post. “Brands have a duty to help build a trusted and safe digital ecosystem,” the company’s statement reads. “That’s why our brands will stop advertising on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in the US.”
