Tesla drove up traffic onto its website, momentarily crashing it, after retailing racy short shorts that CEO Elon Musk jokingly promised to produce.
The automaker recently rolled out bright red ‘Tesla Short Shorts’ with the word “S3XY” printed in gold on the backside. The cheeky garment pokes fun at people who frequently borrow and sell Tesla stock, and then wait for it to drop in price so they can make a profit; they’re aptly known as “Tesla shorters,” which explains the design.
A frustrated Musk tweeted earlier this month, “Tesla will make fabulous short shorts in radiant red satin with gold trim,” and turned out to be telling the truth. Over the weekend, he shared that the racy limited-edition bottomwear was ready to purchase on Tesla’s online store.
“Celebrate summer with Tesla Short Shorts,” the shorts’ description reads. “Run like the wind or entertain like Liberace with our red satin and gold trim design. Relax poolside or lounge indoors year-round… Enjoy exceptional comfort from the closing bell.”
According to a report by Mashable, reception for the gear was so red-hot, the Tesla site broke down temporarily. In fact, despite Tesla carrying five sizes of the shorts when they launched, only size XL is available now.
The shorts are tagged with the price $69.420, which isn’t a typo. The “420” is a nod at Musk’s controversial tweet about taking Tesla private at US$420 per share, as well as the notorious scene of him smoking weed.
