Jennifer Lopez unveiled in a clip that her upcoming short film Draw With Me is “close to her heart” because it features a family member who came out as transgender.
In an Instagram post, Lopez explained that the film is about a transgender youth and their journey of coming out to their family. They have also engaged in art to help cope with feelings during this time.
“It’s a story that’s very close to my heart, because it was a family affair,” Lopez explained.
Lopez added that the short film focused on her “nibling,” Brendon Scholl. Nibling is a gender-neutral term used in place of nephew or niece. “It’s about accepting change and challenges with love and knowing hat whenever we do, anything is possible,” she said while specifying the reasons as to why the film is significant.
Fans were then introduced to Scholl following Lopez’s introduction. “My name’s Brendon. I use they/them/their pronouns,” Scholl said. “It was in eighth grade when I finally felt comfortable with saying that I’m trans.” The video also includes Scholl’s mother and Lopez’s sister, Leslie Ann Lopez, who explained the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation. “Sexual preference is who you go to bed with while gender identity is who you got to bed as,” she said.
Scholl also spoke about their attempt at suicide and how “art gave me an outlet for things I couldn’t say out loud.” The film is slated to release at film festivals worldwide.

The world is a better place for having @JLo in it. She's spoken about her nibling (in reference to a sibling who goes by they/them) who is transgender. I am so, so happy to hear this and Jennifer, thank you for supporting the trans and non-binary community! 💜
