Mattel has released the second edition of its Barbie doll honoring Mexico’s Dia de Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead.
The first Dia de Muertos Barbie doll was unveiled in 2019, which immediately sold out. Now, the second rendition of the doll features a face painting with an intricate “Calavera” (Translate: “skull”) design, as well as a crown with roses.
Dressed in a blush-colored dress, the limited edition doll conveys the radiant energy of the holiday, which is believed to help guide spirits to the altars created for them by their loved ones.
“My hope for these dolls is that they're able to bring more awareness to the Dia de Muertos celebration,”the doll’s designer, Javier Meabe
said. “The Dia de Muertos celebration is very important because it honors and pays respect to family and friends that are no longer with us.”
