IKEA is repurchasing your unwanted BILLY bookcases and other furniture items you no longer use as part of its sustainability push.
Customers can register the items they’d like to sell online, and will be given vouchers to spend at the company’s stores for Black Friday, which IKEA is now calling ‘Buy Back Friday’. The announcement is accompanied by a campaign created with advertising agency Edelman UK.
Old furniture will be sold in secondhand areas of IKEA stores across 27 countries from 24 November to 3 December.
The value of the vouchers that customers will receive in exchange for returning their furniture will depend on the condition of the items.
“We want to offer customers’ sustainable solutions for their furniture they no longer need, even if it’s served them well over the years,” Ingka Group Deputy Retail Operations Manager Stefan Vanoverbeke said in a statement. “Rather than buy things you don’t need this Black Friday, we want to help customers give their furniture a second life instead of making an impulse buy.”
The move follows IKEA’s announcement to open its first-ever secondhand store.
In line with reducing waste, H&M has also set up a machine to reweave shoppers’ old clothes into brand new additions for their closets.

Between 24 Nov - 3 Dec, you can sell your old @IKEA furniture back to us – and we will give it a new home.
If we can't resell it, we will recycle or donate it to community projects to help those most affected by Covid-19. #BuyBackFriday pic.twitter.com/g0o7dqiShx
