Burger King has found a cheeky way to troll its competitors with its latest Halloween-themed campaign.
The fast-food chain has teamed up with MullenLowe to create ads titled Scary Places centered around five abandoned fast food restaurants in Texas, Dayton, Ohio, Alabama, Illinois and Johnston, Rhode Island and McHenry.
While it did not explicitly mention the companies, it’s evident that the rundown buildings once belonged to McDonald’s and Wendy’s. “Beware of places that never flame-grilled,” one of the ads read. “Legend has it, they never flame-grilled,” another ad stated.
Burger King is challenging its fans to stop by these abandoned fast-food restaurants in exchange for a free Whopper. It will share the coordinates of the various restaurants on its social media platforms and via bk.com/scaryplaces. Those who pass by these places will be able to download a coupon in exchange for a free Whopper on the BK app.
The promotion and will run through Halloween.
Global CMO of Burger King parent RBI Fernando Machado said, “We always try to do something fun for Halloween.”
“Our brand is a fun brand which loves a good prank. So, naturally, Halloween has a strong fit. Also, our fans love when we play with out competitors. [The campaign] aims to be tongue-in-cheek and with closed locations portraying them as haunted places,” he explained.
