KitKat Australia has made a bold move after discovering some of its consumers haven’t been recycling properly.
The chocolate company has temporarily updated its iconic logo on the chocolate wafer wrappers to resemble a recycling symbol. “Recycle me, give the planet a break,” the wrapper reads, playing on the “have a break, have a KitKat” slogan.
According to a study carried out by the company, 80-percent of Australians would love to recycle but 48 percent have struggled to do it properly.
The study reported that one in four people have been unaware they can recycle soft plastics such as chocolate wrappers, while another 17 percent are unaware that soft plastics have to be separated from other household recycling products.
The temporary logo change is part of KitKat’s ‘Give the Planet a Break’ campaign to educate people on how to recycle soft plastics correctly.
The limited-edition bars with the recycling symbol urge Australians to drop them at REDcycle bins found in most major supermarkets. Wrappers disposed into these bins can also be used to make items such as benches or fences.
Nestlé’s general manager of confectionery, Chris O’Donnell, said the brand is committed to “recycling soft plastics correctly.”
“We’ve turned our iconic pack into a reminder that can’t be missed,” he said.
Head of marketing confectionery Joyce Tan said the “bold move gives people the confidence and understanding to recycle their soft plastics correctly and help ‘Give The Planet a Break’.”
“In order to encourage everyone to recycle right and drop off their KitKat wrappers and other soft plastics at REDcycle collection bins, we’ve turned our iconic pack into a reminder Aussies can’t miss,” Tan said.
