There are two types of people in the world. The first group tosses their food and drink products when it hits the indicated expiry date, while the second type plays a guessing game by extending the lifespan of the product solely through their assumptions.
Both methods have its shortcomings. The first leads to food waste because the product may still be edible for a longer period of time, and the second could risk health hazards if the food or drink is consumed past due the actual expiration date.
Enter Mimica Touch, a temperature-sensitive cap or label that features a gel filling that transitions from smooth to bumpy in accordance with the food’s freshness.
So when the label feels smooth, the food or drink is still fresh but when it starts to feel bumpy, the product is spoiled. This way, customers will be able to know the real expiration of their products.
The new innovation was created by London-based industrial designer Solveiga Pakštaitė, who realized there is a huge problem with food waste. In the United Kingdom alone, there are about seven tonnes of food and drinks waste yearly.
“Mimica’s mission is to radically reduce scarcity and unnecessary waste by becoming the new standard for freshness information for industry, consumers, and communities all around the world,” the company said in a statement.
The team behind Mimica Touch is currently working on launching the labels to be used for juices, dairy, and red meat. Check out the invention below.
