BMW has previewed a futuristic electric scooter concept that will make fans gawk.
The Motorrad Definition CE 04 prototype draws a similar design heritage with the Concept Link introduced in 2017, complete with its unusual proportions.
Head of vehicle design Alexander Buckan explains that the decision to swap gas engines for an electric one will allow the machine to be built at a lower height than other scooters.
The body panels reveal much of the inner workings of the scooter, which according to Buckan, are intentionally left uncovered to fit the overall look. There is also an illuminated storage area under the seat, where riders can store their helmet and other gear.
Going electric has another advantage, BMW says. The bike’s battery is placed below the rider and between the wheels, lowering the overall center of gravity due to this layout.
BMW has not revealed the bike’s technical specifications, as it only emphasizes the design and connectivity of the scooter concept. Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad, explains that the scooter is, “The logical continuation of the electromobility strategy for urban conurbations and provides a concrete preview of what a contemporary production vehicle could look like.”
The scooter also has a 10.25" touchscreen, which displays information about the bike. It can also be connected to the rider’s smartphone to display appointments, messages and other notifications.
The future of the CE 04 is still uncertain, but BMW seems pretty set on bringing the scooter to production in some form.
