Due to the nature of drinking establishments, bars have been shut down to fend off the spread of the
coronavirus, and have been hit especially hard by the pandemic having been closed for nearly a year. Heineken has proven to be quite the patron savior for these businesses—it’s decided to help alleviate their financial strain by repurposing their shutters as advertising space while they stay closed.
Instead of spending its media budget on the typical out-of-home advertising areas, Heineken—along with creative agency Publicis Italy—has adorned the shutters of 15 closed bars across Barcelona with positive messages anticipating their reopening.
Some of the text reads along the lines of, “See this ad today, enjoy this bar tomorrow,” and, “Although it may not seem like it, this bar is not closed—it is gathering strength.”
The campaign, titled
Shutter Ads, gives small business owners another way to keep their finances afloat, as well as aims to lift spirits with the prospect that bars will be able “to open up again, little by little.”

Heineken’s newest platform, “Shutter Ads” turns bars’ closed shutters into a new media outlet, helping them cope through the crisis. #ShutterAds #BackTheBars
