General Motors has unveiled a new logo, signaling a shift towards electric vehicles.
According to CNN, the new icon was created in-house and is the company’s first logo change since 1964.
The new logo now features a lowercase letter “m,” with squared arches that resemble the prongs of an electric plug. The Free Press reports that the emblem’s new color represents clear, blue skies to illustrate the introduction of zero-emissions vehicles.
The logo is an updated version of GM’s trademark blue square, and bears a touch of GM’s heritage.
To promote the company’s electric vehicle lineup, the new logo will be presented in a marketing campaign titled Everybody in. The advertisement will show various people, including author Malcolm Gladwell, talking about the brand’s electric vehicle technology.
The redesign, however, did not sit well with critics. “Somebody been playing around in Photoshop. For five minutes,” a Twitter user wrote. “The origins of WordArt in the 1980s,” another said.
Others, however, celebrated the change, with one user stating, “Love the new logo!”
GM’s global chief marketing officer Deborah Wahl hopes that the new initiative will change preconceived ideas that drivers have towards electric vehicles.
Electric vehicles that are part of the lineup include the Cadillac Lyriq and the GMC hummer EV. The company is committed to produce 30 new electric vehicle models by the end of 2025, Wahl said. The company also promised that these models will be affordable as well.
