Apple has unveiled a limited-edition edition of the Apple Watch Series 6, including a Black Unity Sport Band and a Unity watch face, ahead of Black History Month.
The watch is part of the company’s Black Unity Collection and it features a black, green, and red striped band and face. The colors of the band reflect the Pan-African flag: the red symbolizes the blood of the people of the African Diaspora, black reflects the citizens, while green represents the vibrant natural wealth of Africa.
The band and face, which were designed by members of the Black creative community, aims to honor the ongoing fight for racial justice. It also boasts a laser engraving on the interior of the stainless steel fastening pin that reads, “Truth. Power. Solidarity.”
The Unity watch face, on the other hand, presents an ever-changing pattern that shifts over time.
The band, which is expected to remain on sale all year, is priced at US$49. The watch will go on sale starting 1 February, and is expected to retail for US$399.
Apple said that it will be “supporting six global organizations” as part of the product launch, including the Black Lives Matter Support Fund, the NAACP Legal Defense, and European Network Against Racism.
On top of that, Apple has also announced other initiatives as part of Black History Month this year. For Apple Music, the company will launch “curated playlists, essays, original videos” and other content that highlight Black artists. Apple also plans to curate stories that spotlight Black families in its Apple TV and Apple News apps.
