Wherever you are, the present is likely to be rife with uncertainty. For people who celebrate the social holiday of Lunar or Chinese New Year, things will certainly look a lot different this year.
Apple channels the era of the unknown with its Chinese New Year film, Nian, shot cinematically via the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
The spot resuscitates the Chinese mythical beast named Nian, who is said to appear around New Year’s Eve (Nian means year in Chinese) to hunt people and livestock. It stars a girl who wishes to look for the monster, and when finally encountering Nian, she realizes it is not as terrifying as folklore pictures the beast to be.
The immersive film was directed by award-winning director Lulu Wang (The Farewell), and was captured using the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s unique Dolby Vision feature, as well as its ultra-wide and telephoto lenses, low-light capabilities, time-lapse function, and stabilization.
The smartphone’s ability is most evident in scenes set inside a cave, where lighting and space are limited.
